Learners use garden or yard soil samples to conduct a thorough evaluation of soil. Simple, easy-to-follow techniques and staining procedures are introduced along with calculations of soil fertility, the role of soil microbes, pH and soil lime requirements.
Program participants form conclusions from their data about the ability of different soils to support plant growth. These results can then be compared with data collected in the field.
Materials for 50 learners (or learning groups) are included.
Recommended for grades 6 through 11; however some activities are readily adaptable for grades K and up.
